Carbon Tax Better Than Emissions Trading?

Fran O'Sullivan's opinion piece in today's NZ Herald questions whether a carbon tax would be more effective in reducing emissions that the Government's proposed emissions trading regime - a policy which Fran compares to the "the old process of buying papal indulgences - where if you paid or prayed enough you could wipe years off your time in purgatory and go straight to heaven". Fran also notes that Al Gore is calling for carbon taxes to be introduced.

The team at The Hive have never been too sure why Business New Zealand were so keen to have an emissions trading system introduced. The Business Roundtable and New Zealand Chambers of Commerce both argued for a carbon tax applied equally across all sectors of the economy.
