A number of the submissions made on the Government's emissions trading legislation are appearing on websites. This one from the Northland Chamber of Commerce caught our eye. In it there is a claim that the Government believes that there will be significant impact on employment in the Northland region as a result of the proposed policy. This is a much larger impact than the recently announced Feltex closures in the Manawatu for example, and seems an incredibly bold move for Labour in election year. Why has this not been picked up by the mainstream media??
This is the relevant section from the Northland Chamber's submission:
The impacts of supporting the Emissions Trading Bill are job losses and a diminishing of our economic baseThe Government’s figures show that 1630 jobs would be lost in Northland alone – a 2.7% contraction.
