We were amazed when reading a summary of party positions on the Electoral Finance Bill in yesterday's NZ Herald to read this quote from Government lap dog Winston Peters "The Herald is an overseas owned newspaper trying to impose foreign values on our democracy.....New Zealanders will never knowingly stand by and allow foreigners to control our democracy"
Not only it the most ridiculous things to have been said in this whole debate about the Electoral Finance Bill, it is one of the most frightening. Does it not remind one of the things that have been said by Malaysia's former PM Mahatir, by Robert Mugabe, and even by North Korea's leaders? Are the principles that underpin democracy really country specific, or are they universal?
Winston's full comments are worth a read. Apparently opposition to the EFB is a grand foreign controlled conspiracy that has to be stopped.
