The blog Quest For Security is suggesting that The Hive "seems to support the idea of the DPP winning the Presidency"in the forthcoming Taiwan election. This is not the case. In our 13 January post on this subject we were reporting tactics from inside the DPP camp. The DPP will now be arguing that only a DPP President can provide some balance now that the legislature is so strongly controlled by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT). The Hive wants peace, security and prosperity in North Asia. We would welcome the easing of tensions that a change in government in Taiwan might bring.
The Hive would also like to state publicly that it is great to see democracy working so well in Taiwan. It would be wonderful to see a full democracy introduced quickly to Hong Kong and Macao. We realise that it will be more complicated on the mainland, but this should also be the medium term goal. We can't see Taiwan agreeing to full reunification (of the type that Quest For Security seems to be seeking) without full democratic conditions on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. We hope that the New Zealand Government is taking every opportunity to encourage the introduction of full democracy to Hong Kong, Macao and China.
