Now that we have the phoney war out of the way we will start to focus on the head to head battle between Senator's McCain and Obama.
The latest polls (see for example this poll summary from Real Clear Politics) shows an average gap of 2.8% with Obama in the lead. Just where McCain needs to be. In contact but appearing to be the underdog. Factor in the fact that a number of respondents will be lying about their support for Obama (see last week's lead story in The Listener) and given that these polls will not really yet be reflecting the fury of Hillary's core supporters, the reality is that McCain has a substantial lead.
