Ports Risk Losing Cruise Ship Business
It is good to see the Dominion Post picking up another of The Hive's themes - the poor infrastructure in some ports to support the growing cruise ship business. Wellington treats these visiting ships and their passengers particularly poorly. In today's paper we read that Centreport only gets 3% of its revenue from visiting cruise ships, so this issue is being prioritised accordingly. Therein lies the problem. What is the proportion of the city's tourist take from the cruise business? We suspect it is higher than 3% and more importantly it is growing. A number of Wellingtonians held up great hope when Fran Wilde was elected Chair of the Regional Council. Here is a chance for Fran to do something - she owns the Port. Something needs to be done about cruise ships, and about the space allowed for coastal shipping operations. Can she also look into the possibility of finding more land for an indoor stadium please. Everyone believes that the port land would be a much better option than Kilbirnie.
