MFAT responded to our enquiries about Kosovo by referring us to the real Minister of Foreign Affairs - Rt Hon Helen Clark. The PM has a well developed policy response - we are not going to recognise, or not recognise Kosovo. Wonderful decisiveness!!
Sorry Prime Minister. We are underwhelmed. Lets move in concert with the US and EU. If they recognise Kosovo we should too. Not recognising China in 1949 was a huge mistake. Lets not make a similar mistake here. Do we really care about Serb and Russian sensitivity????

We actually ascribe to the view that the PM was caught out on this one. MFAT still does not have desktop internet access. So when Kosovo made its declaration MFAT remained blissfully ignorant. There was therefore no chance to brief the PM on what had happened - so she just kicked for touch at her post-Cabinet press conference.
