This article in today's New York Times filled us with hope about China's future. The author Daniel Bell teaches at Qinghua University in Beijing (for some reasons the non-pinyin version is used on this article). Qinghua could perhaps be described as China's MIT (it has a heavy technical/engineering bent) though some would argue Yale. Beida (Peking University) is sometimes described as China's Harvard.
China is changing fast. We believe firmly that the current elite are trying to move it to the Singapore model - a democracy of sorts. But it seems inevitable that a fuller form of democracy will be the end result. Articles like this strengthen our view.
